Have Mercy on Me

blue train

I railed this road
through hard time
poor and hungry
sore and angry
but I stayed alive

and stumbled forth
the whole messiah
torn and bruised
alone and used
to a promised land

see how I failed
my patience broke down
truth and lies
fruit with flies
foul my own ground

have mercy on me
I’m a fragile being
just a weak thing fleeing
just a moment fleeting
Have mercy on me
I’m a full dead man

Peggy Doesn’t Live Here, Anymore

have you seen her around?
I’ve been looking for her all over town
but I know that she won’t be found
cause Peggy doesn’t live here anymore

did you see her today?
she used to walk around the world a certain way
I checked all the places she used to stay
but Peggy doesn’t live here anymore

turn around turn around
Look behind you and see what you found
just the leaves are laying laying on the ground
and Peggy doesn’t live here anymore

did you see her walk by?
I watched her point her finger at the sky
she said don’t ever wonder why
that Peggy doesn’t live here anymore

turn around turn around
Look behind you and see what you found
just the wind blowing blowing leaves around
and Peggy doesn’t live here anymore

Been hanging out all night
under the mystic glow of convenience store light
and I’m drinking beer but, hey,
it’s alright.
I can see you coming in.

And we’ve done this all before.
You’re walking in, I’m walking out the door.
And I don’t think we can
care any more.
But there’s still nothing to win.

You better believe that you’re the one.

Give me a six pack, I’ll give you two tens.
Let’s go down to Charlie’s and then
hit the drive-in.
I’ll throw cans at the screen while you
hold that laugh in.
And we’ll all do it again.

Let it End

cherub2

these miles
dragged in dust

he prays for you
and you leave him

let it end

all the coal that burns
leaves a trace of soot upon you
every move you make betrays it

let it end

this fault
split you open

he fades away
you forget him

let it end

all the plans you made
strip the past of all its meaning
you have nothing left to guide you

let it end

all the tales you told
break apart the bones inside you
there’s no reason to pretend

let it end

(recording available on Bandcamp)

little animals dancing

firelight paints the dark on faces
more than night or shadow alone
fire blinds sight
shows too much

figures have long circled the pit
moved in and out of the smoke
that smelled of meat and
burning hair

so others have forced the image
onto vases and bowls and plates
the effort and value
reflected

and seen now
these animals draped in silk
pawing at the air and ground
so foreign

headlights flood the view
and erase everything that hides
on night darkened roads
my eyes close

picture it
the glass flows through the world
incredibly small crystalline shards
divides the night into
a hundred million shining worlds
still half hidden by
fire

Take me to the Fire

(a song)

I’ve settled it
I’m bringing it all back
there’s no looking over
what’s already broken

you settled this
there’s nothing else left
but living a life
and being mistaken

take me to the fire
I’m filing my papers
you can shake the windows
and rattle the panes
but that won’t make
them let you in

take me to the fire
I’ve carried the orders
you can struggle and whine
and shake all you want
but that won’t make
them let you in

it’s easy now
just hold out your hand
the strap doesn’t hurt
as much you think

it’s easy now
just take what they give
you may think that you’re sailing
but I’m watching you sink
