I’ve been writing since I was 13 – or at least that’s when I started to feel that I had to write. Perhaps the feeling isn’t the reality, though. I wrote a few pages and discovered the fact that writing is hard when you understand nothing.
Possibly still understanding nothing, though, I continue to write. There is something to gain in life from the attempt to bring into reality something that cannot exist without you, something that depends solely on you. It makes a person feel more real. Or perhaps it’s only me – maybe I only feel real if I express myself in such a way.
So I write poetry and songs. I consider songs poetic but subservient to the singing, whereas I consider poetry best left to be what it needs to be. In other words, I am not a formal poet – although I have written formal poems before. While I can respect the sonnet-writer, I’d feel like a 13-year-old writing one….
Not disparaging 13-year-olds.
I used to be one.
