The Silence of Being Buried – Epilogue

sole - 35mm black and white

sole – 35mm black and white

spade

never the bright sunlight
felt on the pate and shoulders
so draws your attention
– now, mind it.

lean heavily into the bank
keep your foot on the spade

she’s brought you water to drink
in a tall clear glass
that gathers and splits the sun
in miraculous ways

put your head back
feel the skin of your neck

never the wind or rain
but always so clean
to draw your own shadow
on the earth

reach your hand out
to take what isn’t there

she’s sat sidesaddle on the bank
and smoothing her dress
the sun pierces tiny darts
through her hat

push once more with your weight
and sink it deeper yet
