little animals dancing

firelight paints the dark on faces
more than night or shadow alone
fire blinds sight
shows too much

figures have long circled the pit
moved in and out of the smoke
that smelled of meat and
burning hair

so others have forced the image
onto vases and bowls and plates
the effort and value
reflected

and seen now
these animals draped in silk
pawing at the air and ground
so foreign

headlights flood the view
and erase everything that hides
on night darkened roads
my eyes close

picture it
the glass flows through the world
incredibly small crystalline shards
divides the night into
a hundred million shining worlds
still half hidden by
fire
