Ground

The smallest boy
holds the earth below his feet
with his palms pressed into the soil
and his eyes calm and steady forward.

I recognize him
from the colour of his hair
and the shape of his nose
and the strength of his stance.

The way we describe
our place in the world
is often far too complicated
as we reach for what we cannot grasp.

I know where I am
as I see where he is

My hands too
press the ground
and I find my living
at that moment
